Fox Valley women wear red to promote heart health

Heart-conscious women donned red dresses, red shoes and — after every participant at the Go Red for Women luncheon made a donation to the American Heart Association — red feather boas.

Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s campaign aimed at improving women’s heart health and awareness of heart disease — the leading killer of women in the United States.

On Friday afternoon, the scarlet-garbed women mingled among health professionals at the Q Center in St. Charles. They got make-overs, bid in a silent auction, and even saw a video of an open-heart surgery recently performed at Provena Mercy Medical Center — a little graphic just before lunch for some, who opted instead just to have their blood pressure checked.

“Hopefully, you’ll see it and order an apple instead of something fried,” said Marianne Renner, marketing representative for the hospital.

Women flocked to have their blood pressure measured and learn more about what their numbers actually mean.
