He's walked many miles in his own shoes

He’ll bare their soles, by hand, stitch by pulled-out stitch, then, with glue and machines, skillfully make them new again.

“You don’t get shoes done your way. You’ll get them done my way,” said the 68-year-old self-taught shoe repairman who prefers to be called a shoe repair technician, not a cobbler.

“When you think of a cobbler, you think of an old guy that’s on a bench pounding nails,” he said. “Basically, the difference is I use machinery, and I don’t attach soles with nails.”

At mid-morning Wednesday, Sculuca sat on a stool behind the front counter ripping stitches from a worn wingtip sole and smoking Pall Malls.
